Scaffolding is old. Very old. How old? Well, the first recorded use of scaffolding comes from prehistoric times, from the palaeolithic Lascaux Caves in France. Here again, we can thank the artistically minded for leaving the information, as there are holes visible in the walls there that show where our primitive ancestors gave expression to their blossoming consciousness, and painted high up the walls of the caves.
That was around 17 000 years ago, and it is indicative of the simple elegance of scaffolding as a solution. Throw in the Egyptian pharaohs, the Inca people, and the whole of Asia from the earliest times, and you can see just how consistently enabling of our progress scaffolding and formwork have been.
